Movie Reviews
I live in Philadelphia so when it was time to see this movie I had little expectations. How wrong I was? When the credits started rolling at the end of Creed I just sat in my chair in complete silence. I needed to wrap my head around what I just saw because this picture, the director constructed was a mix of three Rocky films of the past; Rocky I, Rocky II. and Rocky V. It sure seems to me they wanted to try to correct the wrongs of Rocky V but they accomplished it with the gritty story telling of Rocky I and Rocky's passion for wanting to fight at the end in Rocky II. Yes, I was one of the few people disappointed Sly was not one of the writers for Creed. It is why I had low expectations for this film because he was not involved in the screenplay. The movie did not disappoint to entertain me.
When I was sitting in silence at the end of the movie I realized something, maybe nobody else realized at the time: November 25th, 1975 was the opening scene of Rocky I, Rocky II November 25th, 1976 Rocky's rematch against Apollo Creed and Creed was released in the United States on November 25th, 2015. Is this a ironic or what? You can decide if it is.
There is only one thing you need to know before you see this film, and it is this; The post production of the film was edited and executed almost to perfection. It is my opinion there were a few minor details about the story, which can be overlooked because of the superb acting by Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone. Both of these actors complemented one another to near perfect. It showed the wide variety of acting abilities Sly has even if it is the role that propelled him to stardom. Now the actress Tessa Thompson for the small role she had was pretty good, but I think she was overshadowed by Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan because of the story it was telling. This could be one of the better films of the year maybe not the best because it stuck to the story it was telling unlike a lot of films that stray from the plot.
The plot revolves around Apollo Creed's son Adonis Johnson Creed who only wants to do one thing box. He was a fighter ever since he was a kid and everybody tells him he should take up a different hobby; but boxing is his passion. He wants to make something of himself, not of his father's name (Creed), but of his name in the boxing world. This is all I will divulge as other people said a lot more than me. I want you to go into the film with an open mind. On a side note, real-life boxers Tony Bellew and Andre Ward were in this movie. They were pretty great as the boxers in this film.
Make your own choice how good this movie experience will be, but what I think will be clear to many people when they see this with their own eyes; this film has the look of an old-school Rocky film (story- wise, screenplay, setting, even the choice of music - a little updated as to be expected) and anyone who thinks otherwise they are entitled to their own opinion. I do not care if people dislike the film Creed but in Creed we find a new series/story will take hold. Lets face it Rocky is pretty much in his old age, so the son of Creed will continue Rocky's legacy and that of his father's good name. The writers of Creed gave hints throughout the film from the screenplay a sequel is quite possible.
People should remember boxers today have been fighting well into their late 30s, so expect the story to continue with Creed's son. For example: Mayweather, Paquiao, Bernard Hopkins, etc.. are some of the boxers who fought into their mid-30s to 40s. Rocky will live on in our hearts forever, you can be sure of that; and this film is truly something I would pay full price for any day of the week. With all that said I would still give Creed 8.2 stars out of 10 stars.
